Problem Statement: How do we relate the roles of our family, hope and dreams?
Purpose: To explore the roles of our family, hope and dreams
Research Question: What do you think of when family, hope and dreams becomes the theme of your life?
Our family is one of the few first gift that we receive in life. Our parents who brought us into this world and siblings are the first friends that we have. They nurture us and help us to grow up into decent human beings. Their guidance lead us to the path that we are walking on today, for most of us anyways. Our hopes and dreams, the things we would want to achieve in life can be a motivation for us to strive harder or it can be the reason we give up on certain areas of our life. Maybe it is because I am graduating soon, thus, I find this topic one that is very close to my heart.
I used trees as a concept to develop the Family, Hope and Dream series. Sounds like quite an unlikely concept, right? Not so much. Trees are a very beautiful creation. It comes in various shapes and sizes which can illustrate our various hopes and dreams. Some of our hopes and dreams are big, some are a little smaller. Trees can also be used to illustrate family because a tree is firm and will not be swayed by the wind. The leaves may sway but the roots are planted deep in the ground, just like our family. Sometimes we fight with our family, we quarrel with each other, drive each other mad, but at the end of the day, they are the ones that stick by us and gives us the support that we need to go through each day.
18 Sketches :
Description: The absence leaves illustrates dreams that have been broken. The black background illustrates despair and disappointment. The yellow color the the middle illustrates hope that shines through even at our darkest moments. Although there are no more leaves, the tree still stands which symbolizes family support.
Description: We always feel that the other side is better than our side. So, the side with trees and flowers are the better side in comparison to the side that is without any. The logs are our attempt to cross to the other side. And usually it is our family that encourages us to cross over even when we are fearful.
Description: I am sure many have heard of the glass half full story. The moral of that story is to teach us to be optimistic. The same goes with our hopes and dreams. The sunny side is a positive- brighter colors. The other side is more down- duller colors. When we look at our hopes and dreams, if it seems like it is going somewhere, it looks sunny. When it seems like it is not going anywhere, it looks dull. Family helps us to be positive and look at the bright side of life.
Description: I drew a small tree with a lot of roots below. The small tree symbolizes aspiring dreams but it takes time to grow. With a lot of encouragement (water), it grows healthily. But, our family also helps to keep us on the ground by being humble and realistic, thus, we need to be firmly rooted on the ground.
Description: The hills symbolizes the challenges in our life. The pink tree is our dream. When you look at the picture, the challenges look bigger than our dreams. But, then the sun shines brightly, a connotation of positiveness.
Description: There are two sides to the tree. One side has branches, the other does not. It is definitely easier to climb up the tree on the side with branches Our family can be like the branches, the help us to climb to our dreams and even if we fall, they help to break our fall.
Description: The journey to our dreams is a never-ending one. If we accomplish a dream, we have new dreams. However, the journey is never a straight path either. The nearer you are to your dream, the narrower, more winding it can get. But at each turning, you see a tree, a milestone you have achieved, an indicator you are nearer to your dream from where you started. Those are the hopes in our life.
Description: In the picture, the tree was cut in half by a chainsaw symbolizing a destroyed dream/family. However, there are new leaves growing from the tree, this shows that a dream/family needs to be prune and trimmed in order for it to grow healthily.
Description: This is a tall tree. One too high to climb. Don't some of our dreams feel that way? That it is really impossible to climb even where there are branches to encourage us.
Description: In the picture, there is a small seed trying to grow. But, its' fight for sunlight is hindered by the bigger trees on its' left and right. Even in families, there are sibling rivalry, we try to be good in certain areas, but sometimes our siblings are better than us although we try equally hard.
Description: Looks like a family, right? Our family and us can be very different from each other physically or personality wise, but that should not stop us from growing together and taking care of one another. After all, some people's dream is to have a family that gets along well with each other.
Description: The black clouds symbolizes a bad day. And the tree could be our and dreams or our family. But, the reflection of light from the sky reminds us that nothing is too bad that it loses its' hope.
Description: When you look at your reflection, what do you see? We see all sorts of things, but we see mostly what we want to believe in. The same goes with our hopes and dreams, if you see that there is no more hope in achieving your dream, you will believe that your dream is no more. But, if you see the obstacle as a trial, you would strive harder to achieve what you want.
Sketch 14: The story of a seed.
Description: The picture contains three seeds that have been planted. The seeds are the same but only one one grows into a big tree. The seeds are the same, but the soil is different. This explains that we may have the same dream, equally motivated to achieved it, but not all of us get it. This is because our circumstances are dissimilar. Sometimes the circumstances that we are in are not our choice.
Description: A home symbolizes our family. The trees outside symbolizes the dreams we want to achieve. Sometimes to achieve our dreams means to leave the comfort of our homes and go on an adventurous journey.
Sketch 16: Nature runs its course
Description: Tornado, lightning, fire and water. These are obstacles and challenges in life that we have to face whether in achieving our dreams or maintaining a good relationship with our family members.
Sketch 17: Brick walls
Description: I once read a quote that says that sometimes obstacles are not there to keep us away from our dreams but it is to test how willing are we to break through and achieve what we want.
Sketch 18: Bear fruit
Description: In the picture you will see, apples that are rotten and fallen on the ground, an apple eaten by worms and an apple that is protected. One of two ways, if the fruit is your family, you need to protect it. Stand by each other and always love one another. If the fruit is your dreams, if you do not protect it, it will be taken away by someone else who desires it more than you.
