What is an art movement?
- style with a specific common philosophy and goal
- followed by a group of artists
- lasts for a period of time
Why is this even important?
- Two schools of thought:
- it helps to classify the art work, thus, making it easier to identify the artist and era of blooming glory
- however, some question the existence of "an art movement era" as solid facts or just a passing fad. reasons: not quite applicable, not quite able to discern
There is a saying that goes, "never judge a book by its cover." The meaning of this saying is never judge the value of something merely by its outward appearance. How is this even related to art movement? It is related, on some levels. When we look at a painting, drawing, anything that captures our visual senses, the first thing we think of is how attractive it looks. Everything else is secondary. But, there is definitely more to it than meets the eye. This is the reason why i like Expressionism.
What is
Expressionism?
- suggestive of emotional angst
- a modernist movement
- originated in Germany during the early 20th century
- developed as an avant-garde (works that are experimental/ innovative) style before the First World War
- the artworks are from the artist's subjective perspective, highly distorted
- expresses meaning and emotional experience
- not a clear representation of reality
- art that represents intense emotion
- art can be very abstract
Key Techniques of Expressionism
- powerful colors
- dynamic compositions
- simple colors
- simple shapes
Notice the contradictory techniques? Powerful versus simple colors. dynamic composition versus simple shapes. how is it possible that two very different technique make up the artwork of the same era? It's fascinating. This is simply because the main cause of an expressionist artist was to deliver a piece that would evoke a type of mood, emotion or ideas. It is possible to evoke a type of emotion by a simple piece of art and a very complicated one. Research showed that the color red stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing and it is the color of love. It works either ways, beautiful isn't it?
Now..let's look at some pictures
Lynne Frehm "Masquerade"
Vincent Van Gogh "The Starry Night"
Franz Marc "Rehe im Walde"
Rolf Nesch "Elbe Bridge 1"
Edvard Munch "The Scream"
