Art Movement

What is an art movement?
  • style with a specific common philosophy and goal
  • followed by a group of artists
  • lasts for a period of time
Why is this even important?
  • Two schools of thought:
    • it helps to classify the art work, thus, making it easier to identify the artist and era of blooming glory
    • however, some question the existence of "an art movement era" as solid facts or just a passing fad. reasons: not quite applicable, not quite able to discern
There is a saying that goes, "never judge a book by its cover." The meaning of this saying is never judge the value of something merely by its outward appearance. How is this even related to art movement? It is related, on some levels. When we look at a painting, drawing, anything that captures our visual senses, the first thing we think of is how attractive it looks. Everything else is secondary. But, there is definitely more to it than meets the eye. This is the reason why i like Expressionism.

What is Expressionism?
  • suggestive of emotional angst
  • a modernist movement
  • originated in Germany during the early 20th century
  • developed as an avant-garde (works that are experimental/ innovative) style before the First World War
  • the artworks are from the artist's subjective perspective, highly distorted
  • expresses meaning and emotional experience
  • not a clear representation of reality
  • art that represents intense emotion
  • art can be very abstract
Key Techniques of Expressionism
  • powerful colors
  • dynamic compositions
  • simple colors
  • simple shapes
Notice the contradictory techniques?  Powerful versus simple colors. dynamic composition versus simple shapes. how is it possible that two very different technique make up the artwork of the same era? It's fascinating. This is simply because the main cause of an expressionist artist was to deliver a piece that would evoke a type of mood, emotion or ideas. It is possible to evoke a type of emotion by a simple piece of art and a very complicated one. Research showed that the color red stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing and it is the color of love. It works either ways, beautiful isn't it?

Now..let's look at some pictures

 Lynne Frehm "Masquerade"

Vincent Van Gogh "The Starry Night"

Franz Marc "Rehe im Walde"

  Rolf Nesch "Elbe Bridge 1"

Edvard Munch "The Scream"

Perceptual versus Conceptual Art

As the title states, this blog post will be about perceptual and conceptual art.

What is Perceptual or Conceptual Art?
Perceptual: Combination of the experience of multi-sensory stimuli and multiple interpretive meanings
Conceptual: Concept and ideas more important than aesthetic and material concerns.
(Definitions taken from Wikipedia)

In summary,(Design Class, 2012)
Perceptual: Sensory
Conceptual: Thought
Short, simple, easy to understand

Example of Perceptual Art

Artist: Robert Smithson (taken from Wikipedia)

An interesting thing about conceptual art is the usage of language. Using language as part of art was not something new, but conceptual artists used language to exclusively express itself without the use of a brush or canvas. I think that is pretty cool.

Example of Conceptual Art using only words

Artist: Lawrence Weiner (taken from Wikipedia)

Example of Conceptual Art

Artist: Jacek Tylicki (taken from Wikipedia)

I personally like this one. "Give If You Can,Take If You Have To" 8 words that carry such profound meaning. Makes me think of how much I have yet how unappreciative I can be.

I like to read blog posts that consists of pictures. So, i hope you enjoyed too! have a great day!

My first class

January 9th, 2012 was the first time I ever stepped foot into a design class. I was curious as to how this class would feel like. Mr Deepak went through the course outline with us and my jaw dropped to the floor. Well, metaphorically speaking. You get the idea.

I was never an art student. I studied the Sciences since I was in high school and art was never my turf. I have always associated art with drawing and nothing more than that. Shallow as this may sound, but that was the only idea of art that I had. Thus, needless to say, I am interested to explore this class more.

Interests. I enjoy reading and listening to music.

Dreams and Aspirations. Music and people interest me, it is both unique, isn't it? But we shall see how that goes.

Looking forward to my second class! Have a blessed day everyone!
